Hi All,
Since we have recently opened our exciting new clinical research study for Gastroparesis, I thought I would write about some basic Gastroparesis information.
-Gastroparesis is a syndrome defined by impaired emptying of the stomach
-The most common symptoms are nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, feeling full quickly while eating, and bloating
-The cause of Gastroparesis is most often divided into two categories:
-Idiopathic: No definite source for the diagnosis of Gastroparesis (most common)
-Diabetic: Gastroparesis diagnosed as a direct result of diabetes
-The diagnosis of Gastroparesis is confirmed with a 4 hour solid gastric emptying study
-This study is used to objectively measure how well a patient's stomach empties solid foods
-For a patient with Gastroparesis this study will be delayed
-Delayed gastric emptying is defined as more than 10% food retention at 4 hours
*Our new Gastroparesis study is testing a drug that has been developed to help Gastroparesis patients with their symptoms. If you have been diagnosed with Gastroparesis, call Carolyn to see if you are eligible for study participation!
Best,
Carrie Morrison, Physician Assistant
